“Success is dependent on effort.”

    -Sophocles, Greek dramatist

Success will lead you far in life, but you cannot be successful without effort. Everything you want to accomplish not only success depends on your effort. The effort to be someone in life, to prove others wrong, all the effort will lead you to success. If you want to achieve good grades, you need to put in effort! If you don’t put effort into your grades no one else will and your grades will suffer.  Put in effort in everything you do to become successful.

How to Take on College Studying Part 2

How to Take on College Studying
Part 2
Choose Where to Study
Where you should study depends on two factors: the environment in which you are best able to concentrate and the type of work you are planning to do.
*      The best places to study have good light, a comfortable temperature and enough desk space—usually your dorm room, your apartment or the library.
*      For completing problem sets or brainstorming possible test questions, you may want to study with a group or at least in a setting where fellow students are available for discussion.
*      When you are reading book chapters or working on a research paper, you are probably better off in a less social environment.
Improve Your Study Habits
Here are simple steps you can take to help you get a handle on studying.
*      Have a routine for where and when you study.
*      Choose reasonable and specific goals you can accomplish for each study session.
*      Do things that are harder or require more intense thought at your most productive time of the day.
*      Take breaks if you need them so you don’t waste time looking at material but not absorbing it.
*      Get to know students whom you respect and can study with or contact to ask questions.
*      Keep up with the workload and seek help when you need it.

Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship: Jenna and Deb

Summary: Two cross-country runs, Jenna Huff and Deb were going against each other to take their team to state champion-ship. Deb had been ahead Jenna the whole race, in the last lap Deb stops she had dislocated her growth plate. Jenna gets her assuring she is in front of her and helps her to the finish line, so Deb could win like it was supposed to happen.

Reflection: This is a great example of sportsmanship, and of choosing the right. Jenna had her chance to win the race, but as she said “I knew it was the right thing to do” she put aside her desire to win and helped her opponent finish the race. There are very few people in the world willing to lose something so important in helping others. Jenna Huff has set the best example for people/athletes all around the world. It is always better to show your good sportsmanship and help others out.

How to Take on College Studying
Part 1
*      Develop Good Study Habits
In college, you’ll need to build on the study skills that you learned in high school. The demands of a college class are probably more rigorous than those you are used to.
You can succeed by knowing what to expect and how to handle it. Think of college as a full-time job, in which you spend 40 hours a week on class, labs, study groups and doing homework.
Being organized and using your time well are essential. Learn more about time management, and use the guidelines below to develop your study skills.
*      Decide When to Study
Work out about how many hours you need to study every day. Then make a schedule.
ü  Figure out what blocks of time you have available throughout the day, in the evenings and on weekends.
ü  Consider what time of day you are most alert--- there are morning people and night owls—and try to schedule your studying accordingly.
ü  Think about whether you do better studying for a few hours at a time or sitting down for marathon sessions.

“Choosing the right is always the right thing to do”

-Alex Linares

When choosing the right, things always go perfect. When you choose the wrong negative things come in consequence. How can you go wrong by making right decisions that make your future positive? You can’t! You should always choose the right because that decision will lead you to positive paths, to successful paths. A way of choosing the right is, helping, your friend study for a test instead of going out to a movie. By helping your friend, you helped yourself review for the test as well and you helped someone better themselves. Always choose the right when you are confused, because you’ll never be wrong.

10 Management Tips for Students

10 Time Management Tips for Students
Tips 5-10
Tip5. Review Your Notes Everyday Day.
Reviewing helps you reinforce what you’ve learned, so you need less time to study before a test. You’ll also be ready if you get called on in class or have to take a pop quiz.
Tip6. Get a Good night’s Sleep.
Your brain needs rest to perform at its peak. Lack of sleep makes the day seem longer and your tasks seem more difficult.
Tip7. Communicate Your Schedule to Others.
If phone calls or text messages are proving to be a distraction, tell your friends that you are only available at certain times of day and not to expect a response at other times.
Tip8. Become a Taskmaster.
Give yourself a time budget and plan your activities accordingly. Figure out how much free time you have each week before you add any commitments.
Tip9. Don’t Waste Time Agonizing.
Instead of agonizing and procrastinating, just do it. Wasting an entire evening worrying about something that you’re supposed to be doing is not productive, and can increase your stress.
Tip10. Determine Your Priorities.
You can’t do everything at once. Establish the importance of each item. Then set realistic goals that are attainable.

“It’s better to be alone than to be in bad company.”
-Anon

You are better off alone, than with the wrong crowd or even the wrong person. Too often we get involved with the wrong crowd, doing the wrong things because of peer-pressure because you’re afraid to stand alone. Don’t be afraid to stand alone if you are doing the thing. You will get farther by standing alone, choosing the right than standing with a crowd choosing the wrong.  If all your friends decided they want to smoke but you don’t and they are “bullying” you or pressuring you even threatening you that they will not be your friends anymore, just walk away you don’t need those type of friends. Never fall into bad company, standing alone in better and will get you farther in life.

“Improvement begins with I.”
-Anon

There is more to this quote than what you see, the obvious. No one can improve you; it’s all a process of yourself. You are the only one who can motivate yourself to do better, to improve your life. An example can be when you want to improve to a higher position in your job; no one can make you work hard so you can accomplish your goal. If I was in that position I would have to do it on my own, I would have to overcome all the steps there is in order to improve MYSELF. I am the only one in control of my life, so if I want to improve myself , I have to take the steps necessary, no one else but me, myself , and I. It all beings with yourself.

 Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

3. Heart: Always do what is right so your heart, your conscience, will feel peaceful. When you do wrong, your conscience will prick you and create regretful sensations within your heart. When you do what you honestly feel, you won’t have any regrets. Your heart is your internal compass – it gives you direction and discernment. Just like a magnetic compass gives directions, even true north, your personal compass, your heart, will point you in the true north, the exact directions and paths you need to trod.
4.  Soul: Study scripture and other sacred literature daily. In other words, feed your spirit because your spirit needs spiritual food just like your physical body needs temporal food to survive. Pondering, meditating, and reflecting are excellent Soul- sharpening activities. Try writing your thoughts, feelings, aspirations, concerns, and decisions in a diary or journal. Writing helps you focus and make good decisions.
Get into the habit of daily improving your body (physical fitness), your mind, your heart, and your soul.

Reflection : Good Sportsmanship

Reflection

In a softball competition Sarah from the Western Oregon team, batted her first homeroom but with that homeroom she batted her softball career. Sarah had torn her ACL and was on the flooring hugging the base; her teammates were not allowed to touch her.  That is when Mallory and Liz from the opposing team Central Washington carried her to all the bases until she made her first homerun. This is the best example of good sportsmanship. Mallory and Liz did not have to carry her, they could have just left her there, but winning the game did not matter to them, they were loyal and helped Sarah out because she deserved it.  Central Washington lost the game, but they gained much more respect and left that field with loyalty. Mallory and Liz are a great example to people all over the world, loyalty and good sportsmanship are very important.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Teens should never get too busy living to take time to renew themselves. When teens “sharpen the saw” they are keeping their personal self sharp so that they can better deal with life. It means regularly renewing and strengthening the four key dimensions of life- body, mind, heart, and soul.
1.     Body. Eat wholesome foods, fruits, vegetables, legumes. Avoid illegal drugs, smoking, alcohol, tobacco products, tattooing. Exercise regularly and effectively. Get plenty of rest at night. Get to bed early at night and get up early each morning. “Early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”
2.     Mind. Think positively. Read. Study. Think. Analyze. Seek to read a good book each month. Then each week. Ask intelligent questions. Observe. Develop your mind through positive “self-talk.”

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

-Helen Keller

It is always better to work together, in a group. United you can do things better and faster. As the saying goes “two brains worth better than one”. The other person can bring to the group what one cannot; more ideas that will lead to success can come out of working together. For example, it would take one person to do a group project around a week and a half, while if a whole group works together they may get it finished in a couple of days. Another example can be a person pushing a car, one person will take hours and will run out of energy, while if a group of people work together they can move the car faster with les exhaustion. You will get father and faster working together. You will accomplish many more when you join together.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens Habit 6.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens

Habit 6

Habit 6: Synergize

Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create something better than either could alone. Through this habit, teens learn it doesn’t have to be “your way” or “my way” but rather and better way, a higher way. Synergy is the reward, the delicious fruit you’ll taste as you get better at living the other habits, especially at thinking Win-Win and seeking first to understand. Learning to synergize is like learning to form V formations with others instead of trying to fly through life solo. You’ll be amazed at how much faster and farther you’ll go. Synergy doesn’t just happen. It’s a process. You have to get there. And the foundation of getting there is this: Learn to celebrate differences.
A good band is a great example of synergy. It’s not just the drums, or guitar, or sax, or the vocalist, it’s all of them together that make up the “sound.” Each band member brings his or her strengths to the table to create something better than each could alone. No instrument is more important than another, just different.

So often, in our quest to be more popular and to be part of the “in-group,” we lose sight of things that are far more important.”
-By Sean Covey

People always seem to lose track of where they came from, who they are, and what is their purpose. We always seem to choose what is popular to “fit in” than what is really important. Many people lose sight of the importance when following their dreams, to achieve them faster, to fit in, in that world of their dreams. You could still achieve your dreams without losing sight of the importance. One great example is when a person becomes famous; they lose sight of their roots, of who helped them out. They usually ignore the people who they once enjoyed their childhood, special moments with. Never lose the sight in what really matters just to fit in. If you have to lose importance to fit in, that is the wrong decision, the wrong crowd.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens Habit 5 ,

7 Habits Of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 5

5. Seek First to Understand, and then to be Understood

Because most people don’t listen very well, one of the great frustrations in life is that many don’t feel understood. This habit will ensure your teen learns the most important communication skill there is: active listening.
Why is this habit the key to communication? It’s because the deepest need of the human heart is to be understood. Everyone wants to be respected and valued for who they are—a unique, one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-cloned individual. People won’t expose their soft middles unless they feel genuine love and understanding. Once they feel it, however, they will tell you more than you may want to hear. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
Listen with your eyes, heart, and ears. 7 percent of communication is contained in the words we use. The rest comes from body language (53 percent) and how we say words, or the tone and feeling reflected in our voice (40 percent). Most people are eager to talk and had rather talk than listen. We have one mouth and two ears. This means we should listen twice as much as we talk. We actually learn more while listening rather than when we talk. LEARN TO LISTEN AND LISTEN TO LEARN. Listen, really listen, for understanding.
Seek first to understand then to be understood—LISTEN

Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day!

The celebration of Saint Valentine, also known to us today as Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world on February 14. Even though Valentine’s Day is celebrated globally it is still a work day is the majority of the countries. St. Valentine's Day in early history was a liturgical celebration of an early Christian saints named Valentinus. He is the most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote her a letter "from your Valentine" as a farewell in a heart shaped paper. Today Valentine’s Day is celebrated and known as the day of friendship and love. Men give women flowers usually roses and cards as a symbol of their love. Many couples go on dates and receive many other special gifts. Valentine’s Day in America is a commotion you known that every store and restaurant is going to be filled with people celebrating. Valentine’s Day is a day of love, celebration, sweetness, and a lot of money waiting for the people, and a lot of profit for all businesses.

In my opinion Valentine’s Day is a regular day. Why do you have to choose on day to show your significant other that you love them? Why not expresses your love to them every day? You should always show and prove your love to your significant other so that you won’t lose the love. Yes, I do think and celebrate Valentine’s Day is a nice and sweet day, I just don’t agree that it should be done once an year. Valentine’s Day should be expressed more often.
Happy Valentine’s Day♥!

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Habit 4

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens

Habit 4

4. Think Win-Win

Teens can learn to foster the belief that it is possible to create an atmosphere of Win-Win in every relationship. This habit encourages the idea that in any given discussion or situation both parties can arrive at a mutually beneficial solution. Your teen will learn to celebrate the accomplishments of others instead of being threatened by them. Win-Win is a belief that everyone can win. It’s both nice and tough all at once I won’t step on you but I won’t be your door mate either. You care about other people and you want them to succeed. But you also care about yourself, and you want to succeed as well. Win-Win is abundant. It is the better that there’s plenty of success to go around. It’s not either you or me. It’s both of us. It’s not a matter of who gets the biggest piece of the pie. There’s more than enough food for everyone. It’s an all- you-can-eat buffet.
Win-win always creates more. Perhaps the most surprising benefit of thinking Win-Win is the good feelings it brings on. The true test of whether or not you are thinking Win-Win or one of the alternatives is how you feel. Win-Loose and Loose-Win thinking will cloud your judgment and fill you with negative feelings.
Win-win will fill your heart with happy and serene thoughts. It will give you confidence. Even fill you with light. Think Win-Win or no deal.

“You cannot do wrong and feel right. It is impossible.”
-Ezra T. Benson

When you choose the wrong, it always comes with a feeling a regret. When choosing the wrong you will also have negative consequences. An example would be if you see someone you could help walk down the stairs because he/she is caring many things and that person falls and unfortunately ends up in a hospital, you will always feel the guilt that you could have done something. You will always have a feeling of regret, a feeling of guilt because you could have prevented it. In order to be happy and live a better life you should always do the right things. Doing the wrong things you will never have peace in your mind.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens Habit 3

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 3
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Habit three is about Will and Will Not power. This Habit helps teens prioritize and manage their time so that they focus on and complete the most important things in their lives. Putting first things first also means learning to overcome fears and being strong during difficult times. It’s living life according to what matters most. Putting first things first deals with things that are:
Important or not important, urgent or not urgent. Let’s look at the four quadrants of time management.
Quadrant 1: Things that are Important and Urgent
Quadrant 2: Things that are Important but not Urgent
Quadrant 3: Things that are Not Important but are Urgent
Quadrant 4: Things that are not Important and Not Urgent
1.    Important & Urgent
2.    Important but not Urgent
3.    Not Important but are Urgent
4.    Not Important and Not Urgent

Quadrant 2 is ideal place to spend our time, doing things that are important but not urgent. Here’s where priorities come into play. The results for living Quadrant 2 are:
1.      Control of your life
2.      Balance
3.      High Performance

So, in what quadrant are you spending most of your time? The key is to shift as much time as possible into quadrant 2 and this is accomplished by planning. Spend more time planning and incorporating most important things first, things that matter most. Keep your eyes on the prize and reach for it.
