John Wooden, UCLA’s former great basketball coach who lead his team to ten consecutive national championships, was asked what he attributed his success to. Among a number of things, he mentioned that paying attention to details was one of the most important qualities for successful coaching and for high achievement in any worthwhile pursuit. He even paid attention to how his players would lace up and tie their shoe strings. If they didn’t tie them correctly, he would teach them how.

Details may be small things but from small things come great thing; therefore, pay attention to details and you will experience substantial progress in your overall educational attainment.

The best way to curtail pressure and to even eliminate it is to prepare. Applying the motto “Be Prepared” holds true first time and every time. Prepare for that test, and you won’t worry about it. In fact, it will be your chance to shine, to reveal the hard work you have put into preparing for the test. You will be rewarded for the effort you have thrust into your studies. In many occasions we start doing things that seem acceptable to us because we are afraid to stand out. Don’t make that mistake again, always start with what is right. Starting with what is right will help you succeed better and faster than to start with what is acceptable. When starting in a new school with no friends, often teenagers do what is acceptable to others to fit in. NO! Always start with what is right because in the end that crowd you desired to fit in will not be there. Another example is when turning in an assignment always do what is right, put all your effort into it and don’t turn it in late because it is acceptable, because later in life you will not be able to get rid of that bad habit.

When you see someone getting bullied at school you know it is wrong, and to step up and stop it would be the right thing and that will take courage, not stopping it will show your need of courage, and other bad qualities.

Make a judgment about the site’s reliability based on your own analysis of the site and the information it contains. Here are some ways to do this:

·        Look for facts you know or can check with a trusted source. If the site gets those facts right, it’s more likely that the other facts on the site are also accurate.

·        Study the language used. Is it angry, satiric or overly impassioned? This may indicated that the site is biased.

·        Consider whether the arguments are logical and backed up by evidence, and whether the site presents only one point of view.

·        Check the links to the sources that the author acknowledges. Scholarly writing, whether in print or online, should include a bibliography.

·       Who wrote the Web page? If you can’t identify the individual or organization responsible for the information, don’t use it.

·       Has the article passed through an editorial process designed to ensure quality and accuracy?

·       What is the website’s purpose? Look for motives --- like spelling products or winning votes—that could result in biased or incomplete information.

Using the Web Wisely

Thanks to the Web, information is easy to find. However, it’s also easy to post something online. Anyone can do it. You’ve probably used the Internet to do research for a paper; to help you decided which product to buy, or to form an opinion about current events. Looking up information online is fast and convenient. But when you do online research, it’s important to find sites you can trust. Many websites claim to have the facts, but are full of errors. Others present information in a biased way--- they only give one side of an argument. How can you tell a reliable source from an unreliable one? Also, it is critical that you post online only that which is descent and appropriate, never anything pornographic, vulgar, indecent, out of taste, untruthful, or obscene. Post those things that will make a good name for you and your organization, that will promote goodwill and be of benefit to the world.

Accept your mistakes. Always look at yourself and see what you can do to improve yourself. What you can do to reach your goal. In basketball when you take a shot and you miss, its not the fault of the hoop, but yours. Maybe you could have bent your knees a little more or used your wrist more. Look at the mistakes you made accept them and improve them.

At the end of each section, look up from the text and in your own words recite an answer to your question for that section. Then write down your answer. Be sure to provide examples that support it.

Now repeat the question, Read and Recite steps for each section of the chapter. First ask a question for the next section. Then read to find the answer. Finally, recite the answer in your own words and jot it down. The written questions and answers can help you study in the future.

Review

After completing the chapter, review your notes. Identify the main points by looking for the most important idea in each section. Recite, or write, a brief summary of the assignment.

 Review your study notes every week to help you remember the information. When it’s time to prepare for your tests, you’ll find you’ve created an invaluable study guide.

Write down your questions. Questions help you pay attention, understand the text better and  

better and recall the information more easily later on

Read one section of the chapter at a time, actively looking for an answer to your question for that section. Pay attention to bold and italicized text that authors use to make important points.

Be sure to review everything in the section, including tables, graphs and illustrations--- these features can communicate an idea more powerfully than written text.
