Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“Start with what is right rather than what is acceptable.”
-Peter F. Drucker

In many occasions we start doing things that seem acceptable to us because we are afraid to stand out. Don’t make that mistake again, always start with what is right. Starting with what is right will help you succeed better and faster than to start with what is acceptable. When starting in a new school with no friends, often teenagers do what is acceptable to others to fit in. NO! Always start with what is right because in the end that crowd you desired to fit in will not be there. Another example is when turning in an assignment always do what is right, put all your effort into it and don’t turn it in late because it is acceptable, because later in life you will not be able to get rid of that bad habit.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 5

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 5

Additional Tips
Although working and going to school is challenging, it can be a rewarding experience if you use some foresight. These tips can help you handle the situation and make the most of your time:
*      Discuss your plans with your family. Balancing the demands of school and work it easier with their support.
*      Start slowly; don’t commit to working a lot of hours immediately.
*      Avoid time conflicts by planning your class and work schedules as far ahead of time as possible.
*      Use your time efficiently. You can use 10 minutes waiting in a line to go over a few pages of assigned reading. If your job has a lot of downtime and your boss has no objection, you can use slow periods to do schoolwork.
*      If you commute to your job on public transportation, bring your schoolwork with you so you can work along the way.
*      Be flexible and willing to make sacrifices. You may have to cut down on some other things you’d like to do because of your school and work commitments.
*      If you have too much on your plate, admit it. Then cut  back as needed.
*      Schedule relaxation time. Everyone needs some downtime to stay happy and healthy.

How to Take on College Studying Part 3.

How to Take on College Studying

Part 3

Do the Reading

You need to do more than just read the chapters you are assigned--- you’re expected to understand them thoroughly. Here are some tips:
*      Don’t skim. Read all the material carefully.
*      Break up difficult assignments into sections you can digest – chapters, subsections or even paragraphs.
*      Look up any words that you don’t understand.
*      Pause to think about whether you understand the material; ask questions in class about anything that is unclear.
*      Take notes instead of highlighting--- this makes you think through and rephrase the key points.
*      Create a summary sheet of what you learned from each assignment you read.

You can Succeed Every Day Part 1

You can Succeed Every Day
                                    Part 1

My overall study method: I break up studying over several days and over the course of the evening and day. Cramming never works for me so I try not to do it. I will have longer sessions on nights before big tests, but I never stay up much later than normal before tests. I know that if I take the test tired the next day I will not so as well as if I rested.
How I’ve overcome an initial bad grade: I usually look over the test or paper to see what I did that the teacher did not want. Basically, I do not stress out about grades that much because for me they are not worth getting really upset about. I make sure that the next time a test is coming I study even more so that I won’t be surprised by the questions

Effective Study Methods Part 2 . .

     Effective Study Methods
                            Part 2
My times management secret: My secret is to use time wisely. I know that on certain days I do not have time to run errands or hang out with friends even. Each minute of each day is used for something. One thing that works really well for me is to write everything down. I mean everything. I write down if I am going to email people, write letters, or study. It works for me to have a planner that goes by the day and shows me what I am going to be doing every day. Knowing what I have to do every day helps me plan out my week and my days. If I know that I don’t have time on Tuesday, I will try to get more things done on Monday or Sunday. I plan ahead, especially if I am going to be on the road for volleyball. When I am on the road, I bring my books and read on the bus/plane/hotel room. Missing class is killer to make up from, but if you are upfront with your professors, they are usually nice about having to turn things in late or not being in classes
